Los Angeles Artist/Record Producer DAVID McCONNELL Presents a Rare Exhibition “Polysymphonic Sun”
The Combination of Oil Paintings and Video Installation Give Viewers Glimpse into McConnell's Alternative Creative Processes

“Polysymphonic Sun” a rare presentation of recent works by artist, record producer and experimental composer David McConnell.  Most noted for his collaborative and controversial work on acclaimed record albums by artists such as Folk Implosion and the late Elliott Smith, McConnell is iconic in the indie music world but is most passionate about the works that will be installed in Abba Fine Art from May 12 through June 23.  The artist will attend the opening reception which will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 7pm - 11pm.

This exhibition will feature paintings and video which were created during the controversial period when McConnell had decided to leave the recording industry in Los Angeles to focus on painting and installation art.

Executed with self-taught, non-traditional methods McConnell’s paintings consist of oils and some mixed media on self-stretched, glue sized canvas.  Abstract layered compositions with thick painterly textures took McConnell a couple of years to complete and have pieces of his musical scores written into the canvases in code.  He has explained this by saying “the music came to me as I was painting. A truer music than I have ever written and it felt like part of the paintings.”

It was that music which became the score for the 19-minute-long video installation also entitled, "Polysymphonic Sun" that explores the use of abstract form in video as an antithesis to conceptual video art.  Exploitation and mockery of the use of tension in traditional film making is at the core of the videos theme as an attempt to draw the viewer in yet make them uncomfortable at the same time.  An example would be the over 200 subliminal frames used throughout the piece in an overt manner.  Psycho-acoustic frequencies used in the recording of the dialog underscore a relationship between characters in a plot-less story that are all possibly the same person.  Shooting took place in California, North Carolina, France, and Italy over a three-year period.

McConnell’s work will be featured in a major museum exhibition which will open 2009 in the U.S. and travel throughout Europe.
